May 4th - Coronation Day
This day commemorates the anniversary of the complete coronation of His Majesty the King of Thailand according to ancient royal traditions.
King Mongkut, Rama IV, considered the day he ascended the throne and was crowned as a significant and auspicious occasion, similar to how other nations with monarchs regard such days as auspicious holidays. In Siam, however, there had been no such celebration. His coronation coincided with the traditional ceremonial period for the royal regalia, making it fitting to hold a celebration for the Great White Umbrella of State to bestow auspiciousness upon the reign. Thus, he established this ceremony, naming it Coronation Day.
During the reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, Rama IX, the Coronation Day ceremony was held annually on May 5th, marking the day he was crowned on May 5, 1950. This day was observed as a public holiday in Thailand.
Under the reign of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Rama X, he graciously decreed that this royal ceremony be held from May 4-6, 2019, with the official coronation taking place on May 4, 2019. Subsequently, May 4th has been observed as Coronation Day and recognized as a public holiday in Thailand.
Since then, the Thai people have celebrated May 4th every year as Coronation Day, commemorating this significant occasion.
